Although Oval ar perhaps more well-known for how they make their music than for the music they actually make believe, the German experimental electronic trio have provided an intriguing update of some elements of van report in combination with techniques of digital sound plan, resulting in some of the to the highest degree original, if pretty thought-provoking electronic music of the contemporary scene. Originally composed of Markus Popp, Sebastian Oschatz, and Frank Metzger, Oval gradually became the work of just Popp, with Metzger providing most of the ocular and design work. The bulk of Popp's work, released through the Force Inc.-related Mille Plateaux label, incorporates elements of what could be described as "prepared wad saucer" -- manually marred and scarified CDs played and sampled for the resultant, slightly willy-nilly patterned rhythmical clicking. Layered together with subtle, sparse melodies and offbeat electronics, the results ar often as queerly musical as they are just plain left. Popp brought this overture to plain on the first gear uncut Oval releases -- Wohnton, Systemische and 94 Diskont -- as well as a figure of compilation tracks. Although a round below marginal in their home nation and fifty-fifty more unknown in the States, Oval's remixes of Chicago post-rock group Tortoise brought them in liaison with American audiences; both Systemische and 94 Diskont, as well as Markus Popp's lick as Microstoria (with Mouse on Mars' Jan St. Werner) were reissued domestically by Thrill Jockey in 1996. One year later, the Dok LP featured Oval's collaboration with Christophe Charles. After 1999's Szenario EP, Popp and co. returned in 2000 with Ovalprocess.

Patrick Swayze back at work, Paul Newman forced to quit
Paul Newman reportedly has lung cancer.
The Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid actor has been suffering from the potentially fatal disease for several months and just weeks ago had to pull out of directing a big-screen adaptation of John Steinbeck's book Of Mice and Men.
A friend of the actor - who used to be a chain-smoker - told the National Enquirer magazine: "We have known he is seriously ill for several weeks but his loved ones are being very protective and saying very little."
The legendary actor was reportedly diagnosed with the cancer at the New York's Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, a few hours drive from his Connecticut home, where he lives with his wife Joanne Woodward.
In March, a cancer patient claimed he had regularly seen Newman at the hospital.
He said: "He's been there a lot, he's even worked out in the waiting room, doing the squat thrusts. Last time, he was in there he had a long beard. Joanne is there waiting for him and being very sweet with the assistants."
However, his spokesperson played down his hospitalisation, saying Newman was "being treated for athlete's foot and hair loss".
Newman has previously denied reports he has cancer.
Meanwhile, Patrick Swayze, who announced in March he is battling pancreatic cancer, is returning to work.
The 55-year-old actor will play FBI agent Charles Baker in 13 episodes of hit US TV show The Beast.
In a statement, Swayze said: "I have searched for quite a long time to find a character that is this multi-layered, unpredictable and downright entertaining, as well as a project this current and cutting edged."
Bob DeBitetto, executive vice-president and general manager of A&E network, makers of The Beast, added: "Obviously, we've had candid conversations with him and his doctors, and we have a fairly high degree of expectation that Patrick will be good to work a full production schedule."
Swayze starred in a pilot episode of the program in January before announcing his illness, but is now hoping to complete the full 13-episode series.
In The Beast, Swayze's character teaches his rookie partner his unorthodox crime-fighting methods while secretly being investigated by an Internal Affairs team.
Australian actor and former Tarzan star Travis Fimmel will play Swayze's partner Ellis Dove. Filming is set to begin in Chicago this August.

TV host Henry signs on and off for a while
Popular TV broadcaster Paul Henry will be off the air for the next couple of months, but his long-term future with TVNZ now seems assured.
Henry has signed a three-year contract with the state broadcaster which will see him continuing to co-host its Breakfast programme.
But from the end of this week, he is taking a two-month break from work to recharge his batteries and spend more time with his three teenage daughters.
"I'll be back raring to go for the election but I just want the opportunity to spend a bit more time with my children and to also take a break from the hours," said Henry, who gets up for work at 3.40am every weekday.
"I've got the best possible TV show at the worst possible time.
"I love it though I can't think of any other show that gives you so much freedom and opportunity to be yourself and state your own opinions."
Henry refused to reveal how much his contract was worth but said he was "really happy with it".
He also refused to be drawn on ongoing rumours about his links with high-profile businesswoman Diane Foreman.
"I don't like to talk about my private life," he said. "I'm quite guarded about that."

Neil Diamond on track for first No. 1 album
Unweighted sales for "Home" (Columbia) reported by the chart's panel of nine merchants through the close of business Tuesday, May 6, came in at 30,000. A source close to the album projects a first-week start in the neighborhood of 125,000. The current No. 1, Madonna's "Hard Candy" (Warner Bros.), may slide to No. 2 or No. 3 next week, while new entries from Gavin DeGraw, Clay Aiken, Toby Keith and Josh Groban look headed for top 10 bows.
Billboard estimates the merchants who report to Nielsen SoundScan's Building Chart -- Trans World Entertainment, Best Buy, Circuit City, iTunes, Starbucks, Borders, Target, Anderson Merchandisers and Handleman Co. -- account for about 80 percent of all U.S. album sales.
Over the course of Diamond's career, he has racked up 45 albums on the Billboard 200, starting with 1966's "The Feel of Neil Diamond." The recent "American Idol" guest has earned 13 top 10 albums, including his last effort, "12 Songs," which debuted and peaked at No. 4 in late 2005.
